New Berkine basin discovery in Algeria

Apr 24, 1998 02:00 AM

Sonatrach, the National Oil and Gas Enterprise of Algeria, and its partners Neste Oy and Asamera Algeria Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gulf Canada Resources , have announced recently a gas/condensate/oil discovery in the In Amedjene North-1 wildcat well (IAN-1) drilled on block 212 (El Ouar) in the Berkine Basin of Algeria. The well tested at a cumulative stabilised flow rate of 6,659 b of light oil/condensate and 42.7 mm cfpd of gas from 2 zones on a 3/4" choke.
The IAN-1 well, the second exploration well to be drilled by the partnership on the El Ouar concession, was drilled to a total depth of 12,400 feet in the Lower Devonian. Significant hydrocarbons were encountered in 2 zones, with a recorded net pay of 136 feet in the Triassic Argilo-Greseux reservoir and net pay of 62 feet in the Carboniferous RKF Sandstone equivalent reservoir.
The Carboniferous tested 4,344 bpd of 52 degree API hydrocarbon liquids and 16.8 mm cfpd of gas from a 10 metre interval on a 3/4" choke. The Triassic Argilo-Greseux tested 2,315 barrels of 59 degree API condensate and 25.9 mm cfpd of gas from a 10 metre interval on a 3/4" choke. The In Amedjene North structure lies on the same Berkine Basin hydrocarbon fairway which includes a number of other notable recent discoveries in blocks 405, 208, 406 and 404 to the north.
The well was suspended on 24th February 1998, as a potential future producer. The joint venture partners are currently evaluating the well results.
