President Hugo Banzer and Brazil's President Fernando Henrique Cardoso have agreed on exports of electricity from Bolivia to Brazil.
Under the agreement, the two countries pledged to facilitate in licensing firms to distribute the electricity.
Brazil has a capacity of 60,000 MW of electricity and requires an additional 3,750 MW per year. Bolivia's capacity is only 850 MW.
Several consortia, including Cobee-Ice Engineers-Nisho Iwai, are planning to build thermo-electric plants fuelled by natural gas from eastern Bolivia. A gas pipeline is now under construction between the Santa Cruz and San Paolo, and gas needed to generate electricity is expected to flow by the end of the year.
