China's first cross-desert gas pipeline completed

Apr 27, 1998 02:00 AM

The construction of a 290-km gas pipeline through the expansive Junggar Desert was recently completed in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The pipeline, the first of its kind in China, links the Cainan and Karamay oil-fields in northern Xinjiang, and was built at a cost of some 300 million yuan.
The pipeline will transport gas from the Cainan and Karamay oil-fields for power generation and petrochemical production. It has a transport capacity of 1.8 mm cmpd of natural gas.
The Cainan oil-field alone burns off 400,000 cm of natural gas a day since its operation in 1992.
