Ukraine and Romania discuss oil-sector issues

May 30, 1999 02:00 AM

Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma discussed a number of oil-sector issues during a meeting with his Romanian counterpart Emil Constantinescu.Kuchma told that he and Constantinescu, who was in Kyiv on May 27 and 28, had reached a preliminary agreement on how to divide their part of the Black Sea shelf. The areas just off the Ukrainian and Romanian coast are believed to contain sizeable oil and gas deposits.
The two leaders also discussed prospects for joint participation in Caspian oil transport projects. Kuchma said that the Constanta-Trieste oil export route proposed by Bucharest posed no threat to Kyiv's plans for letting oil flow from Odessa to Brody. The Caspian will yield enough oil to make both options viable, the Ukrainian president said. The two routes will serve two very different markets, Kuchma added.
