Consortium for Azerbaijani gas projects could be set up next year

According to Azerbaijani media reports, representatives of several major oil companies said during the Caspian Oil & Gas-99 conference held in Baku earlier this month that they were interested in helping to overhaul Azerbaijan's gas industry.
Spokesmen for Azerigas, Azerbaijan's state gas concern, said that two multinational companies (Shell and BP-Amoco) as well as Norway's Statoil, Turkish Petroleum, and Chevron and Conoco of the United States were among the interested parties.
These companies could set up an international consortium next year to carry out modernisation projects, Azerigas said. All of these companies are currently working on oil development projects in Azerbaijan, but Statoil to date has been the most active participant in Baku's moves to overhaul the gas industry per se.
The Norwegian company submitted a proposal to Baku on the rehabilitation of gas supply, transport, storage and processing systems in early 1998. Its study was drawn up with suggestions from SOCAR, Azerbaijani gas authority Azerigaz and grid operator Azerenerji. Statoil stated last year that it would be willing to cover all the costs of the project.
