Norway resumes diplomatic relations with Iran

Aug 02, 1999 02:00 AM

Norway's resumption of diplomatic relations with Iran could signal its determination to play a part in the development of Iran's petroleum resources.
According to the Financial Times, Norway's Intsok Foundation has been working on a strategy to help its membership of 55 oil companies to develop a market strategy to target Iranian opportunities.
It is planning to hold seminars in both Tehran and Oslo and is also arranging for a delegation of oil companies to visit Iran this autumn. The initiative to improve ties comes as Norwegian firms are involved in two exploration projects.
Norex is engaged in the huge seismic operation to assess reserves in a 100,000 sq. km area of the Persian Gulf, while Saga is looking at onshore acreage.
A shift in policy towards co-operation was originally approved by the Norwegian parliament in July 1998, following the success of a delegation visit to Tehran.
