Western Geophysical provided data for giant Gulf of Mexico discoveries
Western Geophysical, a division of Baker Hughes Incorporated, provided the 3-D data acquisition, processing, and
depth imaging for three recent giant discoveries in the Gulf of Mexico, including what operator BP Amoco estimates to
be the Gulf's largest deepwater discovery.
The prospect, called "Crazy Horse," is located at a water depth of 6,000 ft. in the Boarshead basin and has an
estimated discovered volume of at least 1 bn bpd equivalent. "Pre-well, we had an excellent quality seismic data
set," said Steve Peacock, BP Amoco vice president of exploration for the Gulf of Mexico.
Western Geophysical and BP Amoco worked in close collaboration to plan the data acquisition and processing, and build
the velocity salt-model for prestack depth imaging in the technically challenging area. All three Gulf of Mexico
discoveries reflect the increasing importance of utilising Western's depth imaging technologies to detect reserves
beneath salt and other complex formations.
Mobil is a partner on Crazy Horse. The other two significant discoveries in the Gulf are "Mad Dog" (BP Amoco operator, BHP and UNOCAL partners) and "Atlantis" (BP Amoco operator, BHP partner).
Western Geophysical is one of the largest world-wide oilfield information services companies, providing seismic and
reservoir solutions from initial prospect assessment through fully integrated reservoir evaluation.
Baker Hughes Incorporated is a leading supplier of reservoir-centred products, services, and systems to the
world-wide oil and gas industry, and a leading supplier of separation technologies to the world-wide process
industries.
