Turkmen-Afghan-Pakistan gas pipeline project looking for new members

Aug 12, 1999 02:00 AM

The intergovernmental working group for the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan gas pipeline project is to meet in Ashkhabad at the end of August to take a look at the possibility of admitting new members into the consortium. 54 % of its shares are still available after the pull-out of key member US Unocal.
The Turkmen government has not lost hope for the implementation of the project, although it is not attempting to avoid the fact that the Transcaspian gas pipeline is the priority project.
The source quoted World Bank experts as saying that the Pakistani market is the most promising for Turkmen gas due to its potential size and the absence of obvious competition.
