Argentine and Chilean Presidents inaugurate Argentina to Chile gas pipeline

Aug 18, 1999 02:00 AM

Chilean President Eduardo Frei joined his host President Carlos Menem at the inauguration of a gas pipeline that will transport gas from Argentina to Chile. It cost $ 850 mm to build the 941 km gas pipeline, which has the capacity to carry 8.5 mm cmpd of gas.
Both countries regard the joint project as important to their economies. Argentina will use the gas for the development of its mining and industrial zone in addition to home gas supply, while Chile will use the gas in thermal power plants to generate electricity. Chile also has plans to extend the pipeline to other cities in the north.
The inaugural ceremony will be held first in the Argentine province of Jujuy and then in Mejillones, Chile..
