Details on Russian gas deliveries to Finland

Oct 28, 1999 02:00 AM

Gazprom CEO Rem Vyakhirev was in Helsinki to mark the 25th anniversary of Russia's first gas deliveries to Finland.
The Soviet and Finnish governments signed an accord on gas deliveries in 1971; the deal provided for 1.4 billion cubic meters of gas to be sent to Finland each year for a period of 20 years. Deliveries began three years later, in 1974.
A new 20-year contract concluded in March of 1994 provided for Finland to receive up to 8.1 billion cubic meters of Russian gas per year. This accord will expire in 2014.
Russia's Gazprom did not begin supplying the maximum volumes of gas envisaged under the 1994 agreement until January 1996, following discussions between representatives of both sides.
Finland has taken delivery of approximately 50 billion cubic meters of Russian gas since 1974. It receives the fuel through an 820-km pipeline network. Most of the Russian gas sent to Finland is distributed by the Neste Oy concern.
