Troll C floating production platform started

Nov 10, 1999 01:00 AM

Production on the Troll C floating production platform has started with all systems running smoothly over the first few days. The Norsk Hydro operated platform is situated approximately 14 km north east of Troll B. According to plan, eight pre-drilled wells will be started up. Output from the three wells currently in production amounts to approximately 35,000 bpd.
At peak, Troll B and C will have the highest oil production from a single field on the Norwegian continental shelf, a total of 300,000 bpd. Troll Oil is also the country's largest oil field in terms of remaining reserves.
Ten years ago it was uncertain whether commercial recovery of the thin oil zones would be at all possible. However, production from Troll B, which started in 1995, has proved highly successful and now that Troll C is also in operation, it calculated that the Troll field can yield 1.2 bn barrels of oil.
A total of 88 production wells are planned for the Troll field; 38 on Troll C and 50 on Troll B, in additionto a gas and water injector. Hydro is already looking into the possibility of increasing the number of oil wells further.
Troll C is a floating production platform without a drilling rig. The wells will be drilled by separate drilling rigs which are hired in for this purpose. Under normal conditions it shall be possible to operate Troll C with a team of 35-40 persons.
Following an intense completion period, Troll C came on stream as planned according to the original schedule. The total execution time for the whole construction project is an impressive 35 months. The total costs of developing Troll C, including drilling, subsea installations and the platform amount to approximately NOK 14 bn. The oil will be piped to Mongstad.

Hydro is the operator of Troll with an ownership stake of 7.69 %. Statoil has an 11.88 % interest, SDFI (State Direct Financial Interest) owns 62.7 %, Shell 8.29 %, Saga 4.08 %, Elf 2.35 %, Conoco 1.66 % and Total 1.35 %. This year, Saga's share will be distributed equally between Hydro and Statoil.
