Russian oil executive shot

Dec 03, 1999 01:00 AM

A Russian oil company director, his two bodyguards and their driver were shot to death while riding in a car on a Moscow highway, news reports said. Unidentified gunmen standing on an overpass opened fire on the car carrying Alexander Yashchenko, head of the Georesurs oil company, which was driving below on south-west Moscow's Kiev highway.
The gunmen then approached the car and fired a few more rounds, the Itar-Tass news agency quoted Moscow anti-organised crime officials as saying. Yashchenko, his two bodyguards and the driver were all killed, Itar-Tass and Russian television said. The motive for the attack was unclear.
Georesurs is based in the Siberian city of Khanty-Mansiisk, heart of one of Russia's most oil-rich regions and home to several oil companies. Contract killings and other violence have plagued Russia's business world in recent years, including the lucrative oil industry.
