NNPC and Chevron Nigeria to upgrade some crude oil production platforms

Jul 10, 2000 02:00 AM

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Chevron Nigeria have set aside around $ 400 mm in order to upgrade some crude oil production platforms, and for the elimination of gas flare by 2008.
Charles Morris, General Manager of Safety and the Environment, stated that 14 platforms have been upgraded so far, and two more are due to be completed soon. The venture is operated by Chevron, which has a 40 % participating interest, and NNPC which has a 60 % stake.
Morris also explained that Chevron has initiated a programme aimed at utilising gas resources for economic use, by collecting associate gas in its areas of operation. The company's Escravos Gas Project 1 (EGP-1) will harness associated gas from Okan and Mefa oil field, while EGP2 and EGP3 will take care of gas from oil mining lease (OML 49).

The joint venture partners are also expected to harness gas from the North offshore hubs. The final project should then contain 300 mm cubic feet of associated gas for commercial purposes.
Morris said that while Chevron are keen to end gas flare in the areas of its operation, this has been delayed as the company has to receive approval from the Environmental Impact Assessing (EIA) body, and prepare reports for the Ministry of Environment and the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR).
He went on to say that an environmental sensitive map, environmental baseline data, EIA, flare risk (impact) assessment and restoration projects are part of Chevron's 2000 programme, and some are being prepared in conjunction with the Oil Producers Trade Section (OPTS) of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
