Brazil's Petrobras refinery in Parana spills 4 mm litres of oil

Jul 17, 2000 02:00 AM

The Petrobras' refinery in Araucaria, in the state of Parana, spilled 4 mm litres of crude oil. Oil stains of over 8 km have harmed the Iguacu River, one of the principal waterways in the region. The pipeline takes oil from the refinery to a waterway terminal in Sao Francisco do Sul, in Santa Catarina.
The Parana Environment Institute (IPAR) is still analysing the damage this oil spill caused to the environment. Petrobras is expected to release a note on the oil spill, and Petrobras President Henri Philippe Reichstul will hold a press conference in Araucaria to talk about the issue.
