AES Brasil inaugurates first turbine functioning with Argentinean gas

AES Brasil inaugurated its first 140 MW turbine functioning with Argentinean natural gas on June 30, 2000, in Uruguaiana, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The company invested $ 310 mm in the Uruguaiana's plant, that will begin to produce 600 MW in October, increasing in more than 50 % the Rio Grande do Sul's capacity.
The State consumes 3,000 MW and produces only 1,100 MW. The AES will invest other $ 2 bn in new power companies in the next two or three years. The sum may be financed, on the contrary of the Uruguaiana's plant, that was constructed with AES's own funds. The company will generate more 2,500 MW in thermoelectric plants, and 1,000 MW in hydroelectric ones.
The first plant to be constructed is Termosul, in Montenegro, with capacity of 750 MW, and investment of $ 400 mm The other plants will be constructed in the States of Rio Grande do Sul, Sao Paulo, and Minas Gerais. A hydroelectric plant will be constructed in the frontier between Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, in the Uruguai River. In Minas Gerais will be constructed another hydroelectric plant, and in Sao Paulo, two thermoelectric plants with capacity of 1,050 MW and 750 MW.
Since the beginning of the Brazilian privatisation program, AES invested $ 6 bn in Brazil, buying participation in companies such as Light, Eletropaulo, Cemig, and investing in projects in AES Sul, AES Uruguaiana, AES Eletronet, AES Tiete, Desenvolvimento de Projetos, and Vant.
