Calpine to construct combined-cycle power generation facility in Tennessee

Jul 19, 2000 02:00 AM

Calpine announced that it will develop, own and construct a $ 430 mm natural gas-fired, combined-cycle power generation facility in Haywood County, Tennessee.
The proposed Haywood Energy Centre represents Calpine's fourth project that will interconnect with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). The facility will generate approximately 770 MW of electricity, with the capability of generating an additional 120 MW to help meet peak summer power demand. Commercial operation is scheduled to begin in mid-2004.
Calpine Senior Vice President Bob Alff stated, "We are very pleased to announce our first Calpine development project in the State of Tennessee." He added that, "The Haywood Energy Centre is ideally located relative to high-capacity natural gas and electric transmission interconnections, and has excellent access to multiple load centres throughout the dynamic south-eastern power market."

The Haywood Energy Centre will utilise Siemens-Westinghouse 510F combustion turbines in a three-on-one combined cycle configuration. The facility will be fuelled by natural gas and will be equipped with advanced air emissions control technology, making it among the most energy efficient and environmentally responsible power generating facilities in the country.
John Sharpe, Haywood County Executive, welcomed the announcement, stating that, "This type of project represents an excellent economic development opportunity for our region, and we are very pleased that Calpine has chosen to do business here. We extend them a warm welcome and look forward to a successful relationship."
Calpine will manage all aspects of project development for the Haywood Energy Centre, including engineering and design, construction, fuel supply, operations and power marketing. Construction is expected to commence in mid-2002. According to Alff, "The Haywood Energy Centre is an excellent project for the region and will complement Calpine's other TVA-area projects in Mississippi and Alabama."
Calpine earlier this year announced plans to develop three projects that will interconnect with the TVA system -- one located in Lowndes County, Missouri, and two in Morgan County, Alabama. Including Haywood, Calpine's combined TVA-area development effort represents more than 2,900 MW of generating capacity.

Based in San Jose, California, Calpine is dedicated to providing customers with reliable and competitively priced electricity. Calpine is focused on clean, efficient combined-cycle, natural gas-fired generation and is the nation's largest producer of renewable geothermal energy.
Calpine has launched the largest power development program in the US To date, the company has a combined interest in approximately 28,000 MW of electric generation capacity in operation, under construction and announced development in 27 states and Alberta, Canada. The company was founded in 1984.
