The chairman of Gazprom, Rem Vyakhirev, said he regards the construction of a pipeline around Ukrainian territory as necessary. He said that "not one but at least two routes will bypass Ukrainian territory".
Vyakhirev said that discussions which were held between the prime ministers of Ukraine and Russia, Mikhail Kasyanov and Viktor Yushchenko [respectively], failed 'to provide any definite results'. Lenta Ru expressed doubt that Ukraine will halt its unsanctioned siphoning of natural Russian gas during transit through Ukrainian territory.
