Ecuadorian hydrocarbon industry scores high on foreign investment

Jul 28, 2000 02:00 AM

In the March 2000 period, foreign investments in Ecuador totalled $ 200 mm, 99 % of which earmarked for the hydrocarbon industry. Hydrocarbon is the key to attract foreign investments since 1996 when it accounted for 61 % of the total investments. Foreign companies were attracted by two new rounds to grant concession in oil areas since 1996 and are carrying investments in exploration.
Repsol-YPF, for instance, earmarked in 1998 investments of $ 232 mm in 1998 to produce oil in block 16; Arco invested $ 255 mm in block 10; Occidental $ 90 mm in block 15. Further investments are expected as the Ecuadorian government is moving ahead the crude oil pipeline OCP (Oleoducto de Crudos Pesados). Expectations are to $ 2 bn investments in the domestic oil industry over the net four years.
