Ukraine siphons 10 bn cm of Russian pipeline gas in first half of 2000

Jul 22, 2000 02:00 AM

Ukraine siphoned 10 bn cm of Russian natural gas out of pipelines in the first half of 2000, a gas transportation company official said. Valery Otchertsov, the president of ITERA Holding, which delivers Russian natural gas to Ukraine as Gazprom's dealer, told that the Russian gas monopoly's losses from gas thefts during this period reached $ 600 mm.
Since the stolen gas was sold in Ukraine "at dumping prices which did not exceed $ 20-25", ITERA Holding's consumers are not making additional purchases from this international company, Otchertsov said. He stressed that the company "has resources to meet Ukraine's demand for natural gas in full, but it has to pay for this".
