Jul 18, 2000 02:00 AM

China will start construction of a 703 km-long gas pipeline extending from south-west China's Sichuan Province to Hubei Province in central China before the end of this year. The gas pipeline, expected to be completed by early 2003, is part of the country's huge project of sending gas from west to east.
The main part of the pipeline starts at Zhongxian County in Chongqing, the largest metropolis in south-west China, and ends in Wuhan, capital of Hubei, with an investment totalling 2.9 bn yuan. The construction of infrastructure and supporting facilities related to the pipeline project requires a total investment of 7 bn yuan.
Hubei has worked out an initial plan to develop eight chemical projects by utilising the gas, with total investment estimated at 17 bn yuan. The gas to be used by the eight chemical projects is expected to hit 2.75 bn cu m annually.
