Diesel spill from Hopson Oil leaks into the Fox River

Feb 26, 2001 01:00 AM

Almost 20,000 gallons of diesel fuel from Hopson Oil leaked into the Fox River near Frame Park on Whiterock Avenue. Police told that the spill is being investigated as a criminal act. The oil leaked out of a tank and entered the river through storm sewers located near Hopson.
A Hopson employee discovered the spill when he arrived at work. Department of Natural Resources officials said that the leak may have an effect on area wildlife.

"It certainly could be a problem," DNR warden Steve Sanidas said. "If the concentration is high enough, it could cause mortality in some fish and plant species." Officials are hoping that continued cold weather will help contain the spill by keeping the river frozen.
Environmental crews are on the scene and are working to clean up the spill.
