Kazakhstan contributes to greenhouse effect

May 30, 2001 02:00 AM

Kazakhstan is releasing large amounts of gases, contributing to the greenhouse effect and proving that natural resources are not used properly, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection said in an address to the republic's Senate.
Andar Shukputov said 51 % of extracted gas was burnt in the country's gas fields in 2000, with losses running to 740 mm cm. Kazakhstan has accumulated over 20 bn tons of solid waste and the annual increase reaches 1 bn tons, he added. The principal sources of environment pollution, he explained, are power plants, metallurgy and petrochemical industries.
