Romania displeased by Ukrainian offshore project

Jul 02, 2001 02:00 AM

Romania's Foreign Ministry said on June 19 that it was displeased by Ukraine's announcement of plans to begin drilling for oil at a disputed offshore location in the Black Sea. The ministry stated its opposition to the project after Kyiv stated that drilling work would soon begin near Serpents' Island. Both Ukraine and Romania have laid claim to areas near the island but have so far been unable to resolve the dispute.

The Romanian Foreign Ministry pointed out that a bilateral treaty signed by Bucharest and Kyiv in 1997 states that neither side will seek to exploit mineral resources in the disputed territory until the matter is resolved through negotiations.
