Brazil reaches record demand for natural gas

Jul 31, 2001 02:00 AM

Record demand for natural gas is turning this sector into one of the most important in Brazil. Sales are at R$ 1.7 bn this year and will be R$ 4.2 bn next year. Much of this current and projected consumption increase is a result of new thermoelectric power generation plants and also of the conversion of current oil powered ones.
Currently gas accounts for 2 % of power consumption in Brazil. This will increase to 10 % in 2005 and to 15 % by 2010. Gaspetro, as yet the only supplier to the domestic market, has signed agreement with state distributors for sales to a total of 31 thermal plants. Among the distributors involved in these projects are Comgas, Gas Natural, Eletrobras and Light.
