Jul 16, 2001 02:00 AM

Since 1997, when natural gas arrived in Chile, investments reached $ 4 bn in gas pipelines, combined cycle and methanol plants, and in other projects. Companies like Gasco, Metrogas' controller, will invest nearly $ 100 mm in projects that will start being developed in the short and medium term.
Some projects deal with the construction of a combined cycle plants in VI Region. Enap aims to form alliances with private companies so as to build ethylene and polyethylene plants in Magallanes. Colbun aims to start providing natural gas transportation, distribution and sale services, while Electroandina aims to start providing integrated services.

Camuzzi started developing feasibility studies to transport and distribute gas through its networks. It also aims to build a power plant in the VIII, IX or X regions of Chile. It is estimated that by the year 2010, there will be eight new combined cycle plants in Chile, and 50 % of the energy produced in the country will correspond to natural gas.
