Iraq to join state electric connection grid

Jul 23, 2001 02:00 AM

Director of Electricity Sahban Feisal Mahjoob has returned home after participating in the 8th ministerial meeting of six-state electric connection grid held lately in Beirut. Mahjoub said during the meeting the Ministers of electricity and energy in Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq signed minutes of electric connection between the six countries. This agreement will provide the participating countries with 10 % of the investments in power stations. It will also reduce the electric reserve for each country.
The meeting asked the UN chief to quickly intervene to release contracts to import requirements of electric production to Iraq. The meeting emphasized Iraq's demand of approving an item that prohibits states participating in the grid with any other state without taking the approval of other sides.

The first phase was implemented through the connection between Egypt, Jordan and Syria. The three networks work as one network. It is hoped that the connection between Turkey and Lebanon will be accomplished at the end of this year. Connection between Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq will be executed later.
