Norway to allow Norsk Agip to drill in Barents Sea

Sep 13, 2001 02:00 AM

Norway's Ministry of the Environment said that it backed the state pollution control authorities' decision to allow Norsk Agip to drill exploratory oil wells in the Barents Sea. The ministry decision clears the way for Agip to drill despite complaints from several environmental groups.
The groups claimed that oil pollution control measures around the drilling project weren't strong enough. Environment Minister Sir Bjerke, however, said state officials had conducted a "very comprehensive evaluation" and determined that the drilling would be conducted responsibly.
