Natural gas consumption booms in Rio de Janeiro

The energy crisis in Brazil changed the habits of the consumers. Besides saving they are also using other sources of energy as natural gas. CEG (Companhia Distribuidora de Gas) from Rio de Janeiro and CEG Rio will supply 13 mm cm of gas/daily until late 2001. As of October both companies will double sales through the supply to Eletrobolt and Macae Merchant, which will jump from 5.5 mm cm to 7 mm m3. Until 2005, CEG and CEG Rio will invest R$ 700 mm being part of such amount to be destinated for the expansion of networks.
Both companies are working on the construction of six gas pipelines to supply new towns in Rio de Janeiro. CEG reported a net profit of R$ 17.25 mm in 2001' first half, a growth of 4,5 if compared to equal period of 2000. The operating result jumped from R$ 21.64 mm to R$ 23.85 mm.

The net income increased from R$ 152.52 mm to R$ 197.55 mm CEG-Rio net profit was of R$ 6.44 mm with 412.45 mm cm of gas and investments of R$ 4.48 mm CEG commercialised a total of 515.65 mm cm ofgas and invested R$ 37.76 mm in the period. Meanwhile, the sales of heaters also boomed. The monthly average of 600 units in the first four months of 2001 reached 1.5 mm units in May.
