Mexico warns legislators about problems in nation's energy sector

Sep 24, 2001 02:00 AM

Mexico's Energy Ministry Ernesto Martens warned legislators about problems in the nation's energy sector, and estimated that if the current trend toward increased energy deficits continues, the production of natural gas could become an issue of national security.

During the present administration, the production of natural gas has been 4.58 bn cfpd, 3.1 % less than in the same lapse last year, he said. Between 2001 and 2009, demand for natural gas is expected to grow annually by 10.3 %, while supply is expected to grow by only 7.3 %.
Martens said that in January, crude oil reserves totalled 56.1 bn barrels, signifying a decline of 3.5 % compared to the year before.
