Demand for electricity continues to grow in Uruguay

The demand for electricity continues to grow every year in Uruguay despite recession according to the annual report of UTE concerning last year. The sale of electricity in the internal market increased to 6,379 GWh in 2000 which represented an increase of 4.4 % in relation to 1999. Exports dropped from 175 to 88 GWh.

The sale of energy generated UTE a turnover of $ 641 mm in 2000, representing a slight drop from $ 646 mm in 1999 and $ 650 mm in 1998 and an increase in relation to $ 551 mm in 1997. Consumption was distributed thus:
residential (44 %)
large consumers (24.1 %)
general (13.7 %)
medium sized consumers (11.7 %)
public lighting ( 3 %)
others ( 2.1 %).

Compared with the rest of the region UTE also shows positive results as the level per capita of energy consumed in Uruguay reached 2,372 kW per hour per person last year.
