The Republic of Cyprus wants to construct a pipeline underneath the Mediterranean for the supply of natural gas from Syria. Officials said a committee will be established to deal with the issue. The panel will also include Egypt, which has been discussing energy projects with Nicosia.

Cypriot Commerce Minister Nicos Rolandis said Egypt would help Cyprus in building a natural gas pipeline. Egypt and Jordan have agreed to a natural gas pipeline under the Red Sea. Rolandis said natural gas will replace oil for the production of electricity in Cyprus. He said this will begin around 2006.
