Abu Dhabi to achieve zero gas flaring within five years

Abu Dhabi will achieve zero gas flaring within five years although current levels of gas flared are some 20 % of the original volume, a senior oil and gas official told delegates at a conference. Since the health, safety & environment (HSE) policy was adopted, nearly 80 % of gas flaring has been resolved.
"We are targeting to achieve zero gas flaring in five years," said Ali Rashed Al Jarwan, assistant general Manager (production), Adma-Opco. "Our oil and gas companies are taking many steps to achieve the zero gas flaring target," he said in his introductory address at the second Middle East HSE symposium in the capital.

He said pressure was being exerted on organisations in the region with shareholders demanding better HSE performance and in western countries, shares are affected by health, safety & environment performance. Stating that costs associated with accidents were high, Al Jarwan noted that not all companies disclosed fatalities and called upon companies for better monitoring and data exchange.
Earlier, Mohammed B. Al Qubaisi, Adnoc's exploration and production deputy director, in his welcome address, underscored the need for implementation of rules and regulations and told companies to learn from accidents.
