The newly appointed president of the Belarusian National Academy of Sciences, Mikhail Myasnikovich and former head of the presidential administration, has told Russian First Deputy Atomic Energy Minister Valentin Ivanov that the Belarusian side can invest in the building of another power unit at the Smolensk power plant.
Their meeting took place during an international scientific conference, Nuclear technology in the 21 century: criteria for existence and solutions. The Russian side has supported the offer.

Myasnikovich believes that the project will allow Belarus to generate and receive the needed amount of electricity and to export it to Europe jointly with Russia. The president of the academy believes that there are all the necessary conditions for implementing the project; moreover, it will be carried out in the framework of the union state.
