Putin believes Zapolyarnoye gas field will boost Russian economy

Russian President Vladimir Putin believes production of natural gas at the huge field of Zapolyarnoye will boost the economy of Russia's northern areas and the country as a whole. Putin said this to the participants of the ceremony of commissioning Russia's largest continental natural gas field located in the northeast of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area.
"The start of commercial operations at the field is a big event for all those who took part in the geological prospecting and development of the field and for the entire Russian gas industry," Putin said.

The commissioning of the field is strategically important for Russia as it may help reverse the decline in natural gas production that the country has seen over the past several years. A spokesman for the Russian gas monopoly Gazprom that develops the Zapolyarnoye field told that the company hopes to attain 100 bn cmpy in output volume in the next three to four years.
Gazprom says it will extract 35 bn cm of gas in the next twelve months from the first section of the field which is commissioned. The section has 104 wells, dozens of km of intra-field pipelines. The Zapolyarnoye-Urengoi trunk pipeline starts there.
