Gazprom and Algerian minister call for international gas forum

Feb 03, 2002 01:00 AM

Gazprom head Alexei Miller and Algerian Minister of Energy and Mining Chakib Khelil have said it would be beneficial to hold a conference of gas producers, consumers, EU regulating institutions and leading international fiscal bodies in 2002. Miller and Khelil met in Algiers during the second forum of gas exporters, which took place on February 1-2 and was attended by representatives of 13 countries that own two thirds of the world gas reserves.

The conference should result in mutually acceptable approaches to the financing and holding of large projects against the changed situation on gas markets. The approaches should take into account the interests of market participants, which is a necessary condition for the international energy security, Miller and Khelil said. They stressed the need for a stable and predictable gas business, which is an obligatory condition for large-scale projects of gas extraction and transporting.
