Feb 19, 2002 01:00 AM

President Saparmurad Niyazov of Turkmenistan approved the plans to promote partnership with the traditional buyers of Turkmen gas -- the Itera and Neftegaz Ukrainy companies. Problems of gas deliveries and implementation by the buyers of their commitments to pay for them were discussed by Saparmurad Niyazov and the head of the international Itera group of companies. Talks were held afterwards with Yuri Boiko, president of the Ukrainian National Joint-Stock Neftegaz Ukrainy Company.
"The president of Turkmenistan expressed satisfaction with the Itera efforts to discharge the functions of gas buyer and Turkmen gas operator," Igor Makarov stated after his meeting with the president. "We have also agreed on some plans both to boost the purchases of gas and to promote Itera's participation in the development of Turkmen gas deposits, including some joint projects with the Russian Zarubezhneft company", the Itera president noted.

This year Itera's applications for Turkmen gas add up to 10 bn cm at the price of $ 43 per thousand cm. In accordance with the long-term Turkmenistan-Ukraine intergovernmental agreement, Neftegaz Ukrainy is to buy 40 bn cm of Turkmen gas at the price of $ 42 per thousand cm.
Yuri Boiko, whom the Ukrainian government recently appointed to head the Neftegaz Ukrainy Company, confirmed this news after his meeting with the president of Turkmenistan. Speaking about his company's fulfilment of the contract terms, he noted that "last year's postponement of hard currency payments allowed the sides to settle some problems and an understanding was reached with the Turkmen side to rule out this problem".
