Israel approves southern sector of gas pipeline

Feb 18, 2002 01:00 AM

The Israeli government approved the southern segment of the pipeline network for the country's common carrier. The central site for the pipeline network will be at Ashkelon. It will serve as the main distribution centre for natural gas to all parts of the country and will be connected to onshore and offshore pipelines.

Only one bid was received to build and operate the project from a consortium of Belgium's Tractebel, Israel's Paz Fuel and Africa Israel Investments. The national infrastructure ministry is currently evaluating the bid.
A ministry official said the government would be asked to approve the northern and the offshore segments of the common carrier in the coming months. The cost of the entire project is put at $ 500 mm and is due to begin operation in late 2003 or early 2004.
