Feb 25, 2002 01:00 AM

Shanghai's natural gas demand is expected to reach 3 bn cm by 2005, of which annual consumption by gas air conditioning and heating is expected to comprise 333 mm cm. A predicted 3,300 vehicles will consume 297,000 cm of natural gas daily. According to Zhongguo Nengyuan Wang, an area of 6,340 cu km will have natural gas coverage in Shanghai by 2005.

Most of the city's natural gas supply will be transmitted through the West-East Gas Pipeline Project. Fifty percent of the natural gas from the West-East Gas Pipeline will generate power in key projects like Shanghai Chemical Industrial Park's thermal power project, Shanghai Zhabei Power Plant's expansion, the Huaneng Shanghai Gas Power Plant, Songjiang Thermal Power Project and Jinqiao Thermal Power Project. Another 40 % is allocated for household and industrial use.
The remaining 10 % will be used to produce chemical products at projects including Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical's hydrogen project and Shanghai Chemical Industrial Park's industrial gas and methanol projects.

By the end of 2010, it is estimated that Shanghai's annual natural gas demand will reach 6 bn cm, of which 636 mm cm will be consumed by gas-powered air conditioning and heating.
