Russia and Algeria discuss to set up joint gas exports group

Mar 11, 2002 01:00 AM

Russia and Algeria energy ministers held talks on the possibility of setting up a joint working group to communicate with the EU about natural gas exports. Khelil is in Moscow for two days of talks with his counterpart, Igor Yusufov. Norway, another major gas producer, might also join the working group, Yusufov said.

The Russian minister reminded Khelil about President Vladimir Putin's recent initiative to create a Euro-Asian gas alliance between Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan all of which have huge natural gas potential. Former Soviet oil and gas producers should cooperate more closely, Yusufov said.
Some Russian and Central Asian energy officials have suggested formation of a "natural gas OPEC" to coordinate the supply of gas into European markets which are undergoing liberalization.
