Albania and Bulgaria emphasize importance of cooperation

Mar 06, 2002 01:00 AM

Albanian President Rexhep Meidani and visiting Bulgarian Parliament Speaker Ognyan Gerdjikov emphasized the importance of cooperation between the two countries. Meidani said: "We have very good political relations and should further promote the economic and cultural cooperation, as well as cooperation between universities."
The two leaders focused their talks on infrastructure cooperation, especially the joint "Corridor Eight" project.

Meidani described the oil pipeline from Bulgaria's Burgas to the Albanian port of Vlore as "very important" for both countries. Three years ago, Albania, Bulgaria and Macedonia signed a memorandum on Project "Corridor Eight" to build oil and natural gas pipelines and highways through the three countries. The project aimed to boost transport between the Black sea and the Adriatic Sea areas.
Gerdjikov, who arrived for the one-day Third Conference of Southeast European Countries, also met his Albanian counterpart, Namik Dokle.
