Price of natural gas is key to Argentina energy sector

Mar 24, 2002 01:00 AM

The price of natural gas is the key to the structure of the Argentinean energy sector, as it influences electricity prices. Natural gas represents 47 % of the primary energy supply in Argentina and its production almost doubled in the last decade.
The production of natural gas in equivalent units was higher in 2001 than oil production (more than 45 bn cm) and 13 % was for the regional market (mainly to Chile, Brazil and Uruguay).

Natural gas continues to be abundant in Argentina, but reserves need to be replenished. With more than 6 mm consumers the Argentinean natural gas market has reached its levels of market share and maturity.
The production and supply of natural gas was concentrated in the State company YPF in the past. The price of the Argentinean natural gas was competitive in relation to other regional markets even before the devaluation of the Peso.
