Jordan to host major energy meeting

The construction of a huge gas pipeline and exploiting vast oil deposits in the eastern Mediterranean will top the agenda at a major energy meeting next month in Jordan, Cypriot officials said. Commerce Minister Nicos Rolandis said the meeting will take place in Amman and also be attended by officials from Syria, Egypt and Lebanon.
"Oil and natural gas issues open a large chapter in the island's history which is why we are having this five-country conference," Rolandis told.

The main items on the agenda will be constructing a gas pipeline to Cyprus from Egypt and Syria via Jordan, and exploring untapped oil reserves.
"This will be discussed at the meeting and if there is agreement, we will move forward," said the minister, who recently met in Cairo with Egyptian Oil Minister Sameh Fahmy and his Syrian counterpart Ibrahim Hadad. Egypt has reportedly found evidence suggesting some of the world's largest oil deposits are near the island of Cyprus and neighbouring countries.

Earlier this month, Cyprus and Lebanon discussed marking out exclusive economic zones in the eastern Mediterranean Sea as a first step toward tapping offshore gas and oil deposits. The east coast of Cyprus lies only some 160 km northwest of the Lebanese coast.
Cyprus is also in close talks with Egypt and Syria for joint cooperation in tapping lucrative energy resources beneath the sea. Last August, Cyprus said it had evidence of large offshore gas and oil deposits and was in the process of delineating its continental shelf to ward off encroachment.
