Thai government to go ahead with Thai-Malaysia gas project

Nov 26, 2002 01:00 AM

The Thai government has no change in its decision to carry on the Thai-Malaysian gas pipeline project, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has said. Thaksin said that the government would go ahead with the transnational gas project, according to a report.
"The government has no change in its decision to go ahead with the Thai-Malaysian gas pipeline project, as we have explained reasons to support the decision and ways to solve problems many times," he stressed. "If there are more questions about the project, the government will explain more," he said.

The Thai prime minister pledged that the government would adhere to the environmental standard, and would not allow the project to pose any harm or difficulty to villagers. Thaksin's remarks followed a recent movement of local academics to protest the Thai-Malaysian gas pipeline project.
The government has decided to carry on the Thai-Malaysian gas pipeline project, but will change the location. The pipeline will be put on-shore to a farther site in Chana district of the southern province of Songkhla instead of Don Hoi Lod of the same district following strong protests with violence of local villagers, putting off the project for about two years.
