Statoil reports on oil and gas discoveries in 2002

Jan 27, 2003 01:00 AM

The Norwegian oil company Statoil said that 2002 saw eight new oil and gas discoveries on the Norwegian continental shelf. The figure for 2001 was 12.

According to Tor Fjaeran, senior vice president for new areas in Statoil Exploration & Production Norway, many of the discoveries were small, underlining that the Norwegian continental shelf is a mature region and that there was a need to access new exploration acreage.
"We still have faith in the (Norwegian continental shelf area), although expectations for the deepwater parts of the Norwegian Sea have been downgraded somewhat in the wake of drilling results for 2002," Fjaeran said.

Statoil is operator for six of the new discoveries and partner in the other two.
