Indian oil and gas production may increase

Jan 12, 2003 01:00 AM

India may be able to dramatically boost its oil and gas production, judging by the geological studies which show that onshore and offshore structures are highly prospective.
These studies show that there is a possibility of many parts of the country, including the Himalayas, the northeast region and offshore areas off the east and south coast, yielding huge oil and gas reserves.

Disclosing this, the Director-General, Hydrocarbons, Avinash Chandra, said there was ample geological evidence to show that India's hydrocarbon reserves of oil and gas could dramatically increase by two to three times to around 32 mm tons -- up by 18 %.
The DGH survey had indicated that the east coast's deep-water resources alone were 7 bn tons and not 4 bn tons, as estimated earlier.
