Nigeria is worst gas-flaring nation

President of Ijaw National Congress, Prof. Kimse Okoko, has described Nigeria as the worst offender in gas flaring in the world. Prof. Okoko lamented that while the rest of the world was making conscious efforts to put an end to gas flaring, the Federal Government was still foot-dragging on the issue.
He noted with regret that the Niger Delta which has sustained the Nigerian federation for over four decades is today being ravaged by poverty and environmental degradation occasioned by the unfriendly environmental practices of the multinational oil companies in alliance with the Nigerian State.

His words "Nigeria is the worst offender in gas flaring of almost all the oil producing countries of the world. Nigeria is the worst criminal in flaring of gas and yet we are signatories to the various international understandings. Sometimes, it makes one wonder, how could someone sitting comfortably in his cosy confines of Abuja feel the gas flaring impact in the Niger Delta. That is our plight.”
“Oil companies”, he lamented, “have destroyed the local economy of the people and urged all well-meaning Nigerians to act not only as advocates of environmental protection but also to address some of the most severe consequences being experienced in the region.”

"I urge you to go beyond the National Assembly passing a bill on the relevant areas but to advocate for more relevant laws with its capacity to implement sanctions against the flagrant disobedience of the oil companies," Prof. Okoko noted.
He described as unacceptable the level of poverty in the Niger Delta which according to him is the highest in Africa. This, the Ijaw National Congress leader said should be tackled systematically in order to give the people of the region a sense of belonging.
