Russia favours accession to WTO in 2004

Nov 14, 2003 01:00 AM

The Russian Economic Development and Trade Ministry considers the year of 2004 an optimal year for Russia's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), the ministry reported referring to Deputy Economic Development and Trade Minister Maxim Medvedkov.
He spoke about this issue in Nizhny Novgorod at a conference on Russia's joining the WTO.

The deputy minister reported that EU officials considered it possible to complete the accession process before the end of 2004. Taking these optimistic statements into account, he forecasted the completion of the negotiations next spring.
There are still about five or six unsettled questions in Russia's negotiations with the WTO, in particular, related to the energy sector, the agriculture market and access of goods to Russia.
