Palestinians to import natural gas from Egypt

Jan 13, 2004 01:00 AM

The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Egypt to purchase 300 mm cf (8.57 mm cm) of gas per year, Palestinian Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Azzam Al-Shawa said.
The memorandum was signed in Cairo and the final agreement would be signed by the end of January, Al-Shawa said, adding that the gas will be used at the power plant in the Gaza Strip. The agreement is valid for two years and would be renewed in accordance with political situation, he said.

The Palestinian investment treasury would fund the establishment of gas pipelines from the Egyptian desert city of Al-Arish to the Palestinian power plant in the Gaza Strip and the energy ministry would be in charge of providing technical support, he said.
Asked about the gas resources inside the Gaza Strip, Al-Shawa said, "due to the current political situation, in addition to the lack of gas refineries in the Strip, we are unable to use our gas."

He noted that importing Egyptian gasrequires a lower cost than using the local gas resources.
The energy minister promised that in case of any positive political changes in the Palestinian territories, the PNA would use its own gas.
