Iran ready to cooperate with Iraqi oil industry

Dec 23, 2003 01:00 AM

Iran is prepared to cooperate with Iraq on dealing with the Iraqi oil industry's difficulties, Iranian President Mohammad Khatami told Iraqi Oil Minister Ibrahim Bahr al-Uloum in Tehran.
"Iran is ready for cooperation with the oppressed Iraqi people in all fields without seeking to interfere in their internal affairs," Khatami was quoted as saying.

Bahr al-Uloum outlined his ministry's plans for rehabilitating the country's oil industry, asking for Iranian assistance, including helping Iraq overcome its fuel shortage. Khatami announced Iran's readiness for cooperation in the oil and energy field and tackling problems which are dogging the industry.
Khatami described Iraq as a "powerful and wealthy" state and called on the international community to help it revive its economy to restore peace to the country as well as the region and the world. Khatami said Iran and Iraq had suffered "irreparable human losses on top of material damage from the imposed war" under former president Saddam Hussein.

Bahr al-Uloum stressed the need for forging strong and strategic relations between Iran and Iraq and hoped that ties between the two neighbours would be expanded in all fields.
