Geologists to study Caspian oil prospects

The Geology Institute (GI) of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) signed a contract with the Energy and Geological Research Institute (EGRI) of Utah University, US, this April.
The Earth Sciences Department of the NAS told that with this contract, the GI had joined the project that the United States, Azerbaijan, Russia and Kazakhstan are participating in.

The oil prospects in the northern part of the Azerbaijani sector as well as the Dagestani and Kazakh sectors of the Caspian Sea are being studied as part of the project developed by the EGRI.
Apart from EGI and GI, Moscow State University, Geology and Combustible Gas Institute as well as Kazakhstan's KazNIPI Institute are also participating in the project sponsored by Conoco, Amerada-Hess and Unocal.

Deputy director of the GI Ibrahim Guliyev and Akbar Feyzullayev, head of the oil-gas geology and geo-chemistry department, attended an event on the initial results of the research held in the United States on April 16.
The GI has been cooperating with Utah University since 1994.
